  • Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) currency auction on February 11 registered $194,322,309 in sales, a -2.87% volume decline from the US $200,067,351 sold by Iraqi Dinar, credit and transfer at the previous auction held on February 8. The latest auction was attended by 45 banks and 9 remittance companies. The same institutions attended the auction held on February 11 compared to the previous auction. Data for the February 11 auction was made public by CBI Announcement Number 3632. Dollar sales in the in the period January 1, 2018 to February 11, 2018 saw an increase of -1% compared to the sales of US $4.35 billion in the same period in 2017. The total amount of US currency sold by CBI in the calendar year 2017 was US $15.7 billion. An analysis of the monthly dollar sales by CBI since January 2016 reveals highly fluctuating volumes. During the period from January 2016 to February 2018, sales of US dollars averaged US $1.79 billion per month. Peak volumes were reached in May this year when sales touched US $2.3 billion.   • German Defense Minister, Ursula von der Leyen Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Germany’s defense minister ursula Von der Leyen arrived on Friday in Baghdad to discuss with Iraqi officials the battle against Islamic State militants, according to DPA news agency. Der Leyen is scheduled to meet Saturday with Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. Germany has been a member of the United States-led coalition to fight Islamic State militants. The mandate for German troops fighting IS in Iraq and Syria is expected to expire in a few weeks. Currently, there are 150 German troopers stationed near Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil for the purpose of training of Kurdish troops. Iraqi declared victory over Islamic State militants in December, ending a three-year campaign backed by the inteational coalition to eliminate the militants’ self-styled “caliphate”. Speaking to Baghdad Today website, the source said, “ troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) killed a suicide attacker, wearing a suicide belt, in a village in Hatra region, southwest of Mosul, before he blew up himself.” Moreover, the military intelligence department announced today confiscating suicide belts and explosives in west of Mosul. On Monday, security troops reportedly killed five suicide attackers in a village in Hammam al-Alil, south of Nineveh. Islamic State continues to launch sporadic attacks across Iraq against troops. Security reports indicate that the militant group still poses threat against stability in the country.   • The first half of 2017 witnessed the export of 24 condensates shipments and 24 gas liquids shipments (Reuters) Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraq plans to offer three of its oil refineries to investors during an upcoming conference of Iraq donors, the govement said Thursday. Anadolu Agency quoted a statement from the state’s investment authority saying that the refineries include Faw, in the southe Basra province, with a production capacity of 300.000 barrels a day, besides another in Anbar (150.000 barrels per day) and Nasseriya, Dhi Qar province (150.000 barrels per day). Iraq imports and estimated USD5 billion in petroleum products for local demand, most of which is used for electricity generation. Iraq’s need for petroleum products intensified after Islamic State militants took over the Baiji refinery in Salahuddin province, which secured nearly a third of the country’s needs with a capacity of 170.000 barrels per day. Kuwait will be hosting Iraq donors conference from 12th to 14th February. Earlier on the day, a security source said seven people were killed and injured in an explosion, north of the capital. “A bomb exploded near stores in al-Mushahada region in Tarmiyah, northe Baghdad,” the source said. “The blast left two people killed and five others wounded,” the source said. “Ambulances rushed to the blast scene and transferred the wounded to hospital and the victims to forensic medicine department.” According to the monthly release by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 69 civilians, excluding police personnel, were killed, while 142 others were wounded in December due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict across the country.
