  • Explosion in Iraq Diyala (Iraqinews.com) – Four people, including a well-placed municipal official, were killed and wounded Monday in two bomb attacks in Iraq’s Diyala province, security sources were quoted as saying. Speaking to Alghad Press news website, a source said, “Three bombs planted by unknown men went off outside a house of a member of al-Abbara city council in northeaste Baqubah, leaving the municipal official and his uncle wounded.” The two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and security forces opened a probe into the bomb attack. In another incident, a source said an explosive charge exploded in al-Azim area in northe Diyala, leaving a man killed and his wife injured. In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The province has seen months of fighting between Iraqi troops and IS militants especially in the Jalawla and Saadiyah areas in the province’s north and areas near the town of Muqdadiyah.   • Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) currency auction on February 11 registered $194,322,309 in sales, a -2.87% volume decline from the US $200,067,351 sold by Iraqi Dinar, credit and transfer at the previous auction held on February 8. The latest auction was attended by 45 banks and 9 remittance companies. The same institutions attended the auction held on February 11 compared to the previous auction. Data for the February 11 auction was made public by CBI Announcement Number 3632. Dollar sales in the in the period January 1, 2018 to February 11, 2018 saw an increase of -1% compared to the sales of US $4.35 billion in the same period in 2017. The total amount of US currency sold by CBI in the calendar year 2017 was US $15.7 billion. An analysis of the monthly dollar sales by CBI since January 2016 reveals highly fluctuating volumes. During the period from January 2016 to February 2018, sales of US dollars averaged US $1.79 billion per month. Peak volumes were reached in May this year when sales touched US $2.3 billion. According to a UNICEF and UN-Habitat assessment, promoting investment in Iraq is necessary to restore basic infrastructure and services for children; otherwise the hard-won gains to end conflict in Iraq are in jeopardy. In a statement on Friday, the service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said, “troops of the 29th brigade foiled, in the evening, an attack by IS members against Tal Sufuk region, on borders between Iraq and Syria.” The attack, according to the statement, “is still ongoing.” On Tuesday, the troops thwarted a similar attack inflicting huge losses in lives and equipment against the militants.
