UN agency: One in four Iraqi children in poverty due to conflicts, violence

  • Two Iraqi children appear in a bad condition as the anti-terror war left one in four Iraqi children in poverty, according to a UNAMI statement Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – A UN agency has revealed that violent acts in Iraq have left one in four children in poverty and pushed families to extreme measures to survive. In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Alghad Press on Sunday, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) echoed a call by the UNICEF and UN-Habitat for urgent investment to restore basic infrastructure and services for children and families in Iraq. “Violence may have subsided in Iraq, but it has upended the lives of millions across the country, leaving one in four children in poverty and pushing families to extreme measures to survive,” the statement read. According to a UNICEF and UN-Habitat assessment, promoting investment in Iraq is necessary to restore basic infrastructure and services for children; otherwise the hard-won gains to end conflict in Iraq are in jeopardy.   • Iraqi forces repel Islamic State attack against borders with Syria

In a statement on Friday, the service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said, “troops of the 29th brigade foiled, in the evening, an attack by IS members against Tal Sufuk region, on borders between Iraq and Syria.” The attack, according to the statement, “is still ongoing.” On Tuesday, the troops thwarted a similar attack inflicting huge losses in lives and equipment against the militants. Last month, the Iraqi Media News Agency quoted Farhan Mohamed al-Duleimi, member of the Anbar provincial council as saying that intelligence information from Syria confirmed presence of IS members near al-BuKamal region in Syria to launch attacks against Qaim, located near Iraqi-Syrian borders, and that they prepared for suicide attacks to target military units deployed on borders between Iraq and Syria.   • Anbar (IraqiNews.com) An Iraqi municipal official said Friday that Islamic State militants still pose a threat to Iraq by maintaining presence at Syrian regions on the border with Iraq. Mohamed al-Dulaimi, a member of Anbar Province Council, was quoted saying in press statements that Hezein, Sousa and Barghoul border regions in Syria still “pose a security threat to weste Anbar”. Security sources were quoted as saying that the operation was carried out by the counter-terrorism and intelligence teams at Urfa province security department. Authorities, according to the sources, were notified that group of IS members, including senior leaders, were passing from Syria to Turkey via smugglers. The members infiltrated into Turkey with help of three Kurdish organizations including the Democratic Union Party (PYD) ‘s military arm, Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which are labelled in Turkey as terrorists, and the Kurdistan Communities Union. The arrested ones included seven Algerians, two Syrians, two Iraqis, one of whom was the IS former health minister, a Dutch member, a British from Moroccan origins and an Egyptian, the source added.
