(AP Photo/Hadi Mizban) Baghdad (Iraqinews.com) – Eight people were killed and injured in a bomb blast that rocked a northe Baghdad district on Saturday night, a security source was quoted as saying. The Kuwaiti al-Watan newspaper quoted the source saying, “A roadside bomb went off in Dujail district, 70 km north of Baghdad, leaving two persons dead and six others injured.” “Security forces cordoned off the blast site and prevented passers-by from approaching in anticipation of any other bomb attack,” the source said. Despite the presence of Islamic State remnants in nearby areas, it is rare for the Shia-dominated Dujail district to witness bomb blasts or violent acts as it is considered as one of the calmest towns in Iraq. The Iraqi capital has seen almost daily bombings and armed attacks against security members, paramilitary troops and civilians since the Iraqi govement launched a wide-scale campaign to retake Islamic State-occupied areas in 2016. Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The pro-govement paramilitary troops have repulsed an Islamic State attack launched against the border between Iraq and Syria, the media service announced. In a statement on Friday, the service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said, “troops of the 29th brigade foiled, in the evening, an attack by IS members against Tal Sufuk region, on borders between Iraq and Syria.” The attack, according to the statement, “is still ongoing.” On Tuesday, the troops thwarted a similar attack inflicting huge losses in lives and equipment against the militants. Last month, the Iraqi Media News Agency quoted Farhan Mohamed al-Duleimi, member of the Anbar provincial council as saying that intelligence information from Syria confirmed presence of IS members near al-BuKamal region in Syria to launch attacks against Qaim, located near Iraqi-Syrian borders, and that they prepared for suicide attacks to target military units deployed on borders between Iraq and Syria. German Defense Minister, Ursula von der Leyen Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Germany’s defense minister ursula Von der Leyen arrived on Friday in Baghdad to discuss with Iraqi officials the battle against Islamic State militants, according to DPA news agency. Der Leyen is scheduled to meet Saturday with Iraqi President Fuad Masum and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. Germany has been a member of the United States-led coalition to fight Islamic State militants. The mandate for German troops fighting IS in Iraq and Syria is expected to expire in a few weeks. Currently, there are 150 German troopers stationed near Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil for the purpose of training of Kurdish troops. Iraqi declared victory over Islamic State militants in December, ending a three-year campaign backed by the inteational coalition to eliminate the militants’ self-styled “caliphate”. Speaking to Baghdad Today website, the source said, “ troops of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) killed a suicide attacker, wearing a suicide belt, in a village in Hatra region, southwest of Mosul, before he blew up himself.” Moreover, the military intelligence department announced today confiscating suicide belts and explosives in west of Mosul. The source told Baghdad Today on Thursday that “a terrorist sniper in Tarimiya, north of Baghdad, had killed two soldiers, one near Ibin Sina and the other near ak-Houra, both in the same precinct”. “Security forces have been chasing the sniper for two weeks, but have not apprehended him yet due to the region’s geography,” according to the source. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) had recorded 115 deaths among Iraqis due to violence, armed conflict and terrorist attacks across the country during the month of January. According to the organization, 3298 Iraqi civilians were killed and 4781 others were wounded in violence and armed conflict throughout 2017. Speaking to Alghad Press, the source said the court reviewed the lawsuit of the three IS members. “The suspects used to work with the group. Their mission was to deliver the food commodities and money to families of the group members in Diyala.” “They confessed during investigations that they used to take the food supply from one person then from another after the first one was arrested. The other one was later arrested,” the source added. Inteational coalition aircraft Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Iraq’s military command said an armed group was bombarded by U.S.-led coalition warplanes early Saturday in Anbar, a few hours after news reports said the jets mistakenly hit a local police officer and civilians. The Joint Operations Command’s War Media Cell said that coalition warplanes struck an “armed group” in al-Baghdadi region, west of the province during a hunt for a terrorist element. “The JOC possessed accurate intelligence information about the presence of a terrorist leader, Karim al-Samarmad, at a house in Baghdadi for a meeting preparing for an attack against security forces and citizens”, the command said in a statement. It added that army forces, backed by coalition jets, moved to the area. Finishing the collection of evidence, the forces pulled back, only to detect “a gathering of gunmen”, which “aircraft targeted without coordination with the assigned force”, as the statement put it. Anadolu Agency quoted a statement from the state’s investment authority saying that the refineries include Faw, in the southe Basra province, with a production capacity of 300.000 barrels a day, besides another in Anbar (150.000 barrels per day) and Nasseriya, Dhi Qar province (150.000 barrels per day). Iraq imports and estimated USD5 billion in petroleum products for local demand, most of which is used for electricity generation. Iraq’s need for petroleum products intensified after Islamic State militants took over the Baiji refinery in Salahuddin province, which secured nearly a third of the country’s needs with a capacity of 170.000 barrels per day. Earlier on the day, a security source said seven people were killed and injured in an explosion, north of the capital. “A bomb exploded near stores in al-Mushahada region in Tarmiyah, northe Baghdad,” the source said. “The blast left two people killed and five others wounded,” the source said. “Ambulances rushed to the blast scene and transferred the wounded to hospital and the victims to forensic medicine department.” According to the monthly release by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), a total of 69 civilians, excluding police personnel, were killed, while 142 others were wounded in December due to acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict across the country.
