Explosion in Iraq Diyala (Iraqinews.com) – Four people, including a well-placed municipal official, were killed and wounded Monday in two bomb attacks in Iraq’s Diyala province, security sources were quoted as saying. Speaking to Alghad Press news website, a source said, “Three bombs planted by unknown men went off outside a house of a member of al-Abbara city council in northeaste Baqubah, leaving the municipal official and his uncle wounded.” The two were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and security forces opened a probe into the bomb attack. In another incident, a source said an explosive charge exploded in al-Azim area in northe Diyala, leaving a man killed and his wife injured. In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Islamic State extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014. Security forces search a car following a shooting attack in Iraq Salauddin (Iraqinews.com) – Six people from the same family were killed and injured in an armed attack in Dujail district, south of Salahuddin, on Saturday night, the Interior Ministry’s media office was quoted as saying. In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Alforat News, the media office said, “An armed group opened fire on a house in al-Jumhuri area, east of Dujail district, leaving three of the family members who were inside the home dead and three others injured.” The office added that security forces launched a manhunt to arrest perpetrators of the shooting, and opened a probe to determine circumstances of the incident. The Shia-dominated Dujail district is considered one of the calmest towns in Iraq despite the presence of Islamic State remnants in neighboring areas. The Kuwaiti al-Watan newspaper quoted the source saying, “A roadside bomb went off in Dujail district, 70 km north of Baghdad, leaving two persons dead and six others injured.” “Security forces cordoned off the blast site and prevented passers-by from approaching in anticipation of any other bomb attack,” the source said. Despite the presence of Islamic State remnants in nearby areas, it is rare for the Shia-dominated Dujail district to witness bomb blasts or violent acts as it is considered as one of the calmest towns in Iraq. In a statement on Friday, the service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said, “troops of the 29th brigade foiled, in the evening, an attack by IS members against Tal Sufuk region, on borders between Iraq and Syria.” The attack, according to the statement, “is still ongoing.” On Tuesday, the troops thwarted a similar attack inflicting huge losses in lives and equipment against the militants. Last month, the Iraqi Media News Agency quoted Farhan Mohamed al-Duleimi, member of the Anbar provincial council as saying that intelligence information from Syria confirmed presence of IS members near al-BuKamal region in Syria to launch attacks against Qaim, located near Iraqi-Syrian borders, and that they prepared for suicide attacks to target military units deployed on borders between Iraq and Syria. The Joint Operations Command’s War Media Cell said the pair were deactivating the vehicle which was abandoned at Jurf al-Nasr region before it exploded. Babil has been relatively stable on the security level, but witnessed some attacks against civilians and security troops. Iraq declared military victory over Islamic State militants in December, ending three years of operations to retake areas occupied by the group in 2014. Kirkuk  (IraqiNews.com) The ceasefire truce agreed between Iraqi forces and Kurdish Peshmerga troops remains prone to collapsing, a senior Peshmerga commander was quoted saying on Thursday. Sirwan Barzani, a commander of the Makhmur zone in Peshmerga, told London-based Alhayat that “ceasefire truce between Baghdad and Erbil remains fragile, and Peshmerga remain on alert”. Explaining his statement, Barzani said “there are no guarantees from Baghdad or the Popular Mobilization Forces (for sustaining the truce)”. Makhmur, which falls to the west of Erbil, Kurdistan Region’s capital, is a home to an Arab majority and a Kurdish minority. It was the stage of a military standoff between the two sides last October. Iraqi forces took over Makhmur and other regions disputed with Kurdistan in October in response to a referendum the autonomous region held in September when a majority of citizens voted for independence from Iraq, a step which Baghdad deemed unconstitutional.
