Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) currency auction on February 11 registered $194,322,309 in sales, a -2.87% volume decline from the US $200,067,351 sold by Iraqi Dinar, credit and transfer at the previous auction held on February 8. The latest auction was attended by 45 banks and 9 remittance companies. The same institutions attended the auction held on February 11 compared to the previous auction. Data for the February 11 auction was made public by CBI Announcement Number 3632. Dollar sales in the in the period January 1, 2018 to February 11, 2018 saw an increase of -1% compared to the sales of US $4.35 billion in the same period in 2017. The total amount of US currency sold by CBI in the calendar year 2017 was US $15.7 billion. An analysis of the monthly dollar sales by CBI since January 2016 reveals highly fluctuating volumes. During the period from January 2016 to February 2018, sales of US dollars averaged US $1.79 billion per month. Peak volumes were reached in May this year when sales touched US $2.3 billion. The source told Baghdad Today on Thursday that “a terrorist sniper in Tarimiya, north of Baghdad, had killed two soldiers, one near Ibin Sina and the other near ak-Houra, both in the same precinct”. “Security forces have been chasing the sniper for two weeks, but have not apprehended him yet due to the region’s geography,” according to the source. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) had recorded 115 deaths among Iraqis due to violence, armed conflict and terrorist attacks across the country during the month of January. According to the organization, 3298 Iraqi civilians were killed and 4781 others were wounded in violence and armed conflict throughout 2017. The health and environment ministries said in a statement on Friday that their teams began removing 130.000 items left over by the war against the Islamic State in Hawija, a former group stronghold southwest of Kirkuk. The process, carried out in cooperation with the military and police, comes in preparation for the retu of refugees. Iraqi forces declared victory over Islamic State militants in December, ending a three-year-old campaign to bring down the group’s self-styled “caliphate” declared in 2014. The govement declared the recapture of Hawija in September. Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) An Iraqi soldier was killed and an officer was wounded while trying to deactivate a booby-trapped vehicle in Babil province, south of Baghdad. The Joint Operations Command’s War Media Cell said the pair were deactivating the vehicle which was abandoned at Jurf al-Nasr region before it exploded. Babil has been relatively stable on the security level, but witnessed some attacks against civilians and security troops. Iraq declared military victory over Islamic State militants in December, ending three years of operations to retake areas occupied by the group in 2014. An armored vehicle rams into an Islamic State militant during a military operation Nineveh (Iraqinews.com) – At least 21 militants were killed in a military operation which was launched earlier on Tuesday to purge the southe part of Mosul from Islamic State remnants, a military official was quoted as saying. Speaking to the London-based Al-Arab daily newspaper on Wednesday, Colonel Ahmed al-Jubouri said, “About 21 Islamic State militants were killed, and six armored vehicles were destroyed during the military operation, which was launched Tuesday to purge southe Mosul from IS remnants.” “Joint troops from the Iraqi police and army, as well as al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) are taking part in the clampdown,” he said, adding that the military operation has not come to an end yet due to the geographical nature of the area and the presence of many civilian families there.
