(Reuters/ Syria News) Russia said on Tuesday it could not confirm that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed in an air strike in Syria last month, the Interfax news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov as saying.

Moscow said on Friday its forces may have killed the secretive Islamic State leader, but Washington said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials were skeptical.

Last week, Syria’s state television announced that the supreme leader of the Islamic State group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed in air strikes on the city of Raqqa, according to a statement published by the so-called Islamic State’s Wilayat al-Raqqa.

It is noteworthy, al-Baghdadi has been reported dead before and so the unconfirmed reports about his death should be treated with suspicion.
