Ramadi (IraqiNews.com) An improvised bomb planted by Islamic State militants exploded Saturday in Anbar province, killing two people attending a funeral, Iraqi police sources said.
Kuwaiti Kuna news agency quoted police sources saying that the IED went off inside a cemetery in Ramadi during a funeral ceremony, killing two and wounding three others.
The source said Islamic State militants had used to stash munitions inside cemeteries in the city, adding that they became battlefields between the militants and troops at some cases.
Violence and armed conflicts left more than 500 dead and wounded across Iraq during the month of July, according to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI).
Islamic State militants are still holding three towns in weste Anbar near the Syrian borders. Iraqi govement forces and tribal militias are preparing for future offensives to retake those regions from the militants.
Last month, the Iraqi govement marked its biggest victory over the Islamic State since its emergence in 2014, retaking Mosul, the group’s former capital, after more that eight months of battles.
